Buddha: In plain Buddhism ‘Buddha’ is not just a name but refers to one who has mastered their own insights and has become enlightened through their years of efforts.
Buddhist tradition and historians state that Gautama (the Buddha we all are familiar with) was born in Lumbini, a province in Nepal, and raised in Kapilavastu, situated in Tilaurakot, Nepal. Gautam Buddha after enlightening himself in Bodh Gaya gave his first sermon in Sarnath.
After spreading the knowledge to the world, Buddha is believed to have died in Kushinagar.
The evidence shown in the early texts has suggested that Buddha was born in the Shakya clan in the 5th century. His father, Suddhodana was a chieftain or some consider him to be the king of Kapilvastu. His mother was Queen Maya. The birth name given to Buddha was ‘Siddhartha Gautam’.
Many people all over the world might consider Siddhartha Gautam to be the only Buddha, who gained enlightenment. But in a Pali canon, it is clearly stated that ‘Buddhas did appear before and will continue to appear in the future. It is believed to be the eternal cycle and Buddhism or the knowledge that ‘Buddha’ would spread around the world will never come to an end.
According to Buddhism and ancient Buddhists, there are a total of 28 known Buddhas, all of whom gained enlightenment under a certain tree. The ‘Halo’ that appears around the Buddha, as we may have seen in the pictures, is the indication of enlightenment or supreme intelligence that one achieves to become ‘Buddha’.
There might have been a lot of Buddhas in the past but the one thing every single one of them preached was ‘Dhamma’, a knowledge that gives deliverance and liberation from birth, suffering, and death to all human beings.
Lumbini: Birth Place of Gautama Buddha
Lumbini (Nepali and Sanskrit: लुम्बिनी) is a holy place and considered to be the birthplace of the Buddha in the Buddhist tradition. This historic place is situated in the Rupandehi District in Nepal. Queen Maya Devi, gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini in 563 BCE.
For all the Buddhists around the world, Lumbini is the most sacred and historic pilgrimage site where thousands of Buddhists come to relax their soul and mind.
In recent days, Lumbini has hundreds of Temples, Gumbas, and Museums, all of which are established by various countries to contribute to the religion. The palace or place where Buddha was born is surrounded by walls and protected very securely, where millions of pilgrims visit every year.
Also, there is the Puskarini, or Holy Pond, in Lumbini where Maya Devi, according to the ancient texts and evidence, took a dip (ritual) before Buddha was born. It is also the pond where Buddha had his first bath. In 1997, Lumbini was listed as the World Heritage site by UNESCO.
