Brief introduction to Euro Cup 2020 (European Football Championship)
The UEFA European Football Championship or Euro 2020 will be the 16th UEFA European Championship. The games will be played in 11 cities of 11 European countries.
The famous Wembley stadium situated in London will host the semifinal match. This will only be the first time since 1996 that the stadium is hosting the semi-final match in the Euro cup.
Initially scheduled to 13 cities, Brussels and Dublin city were removed from hosting the match, making way to the Wembley stadium to host the semifinal match.
All eyes will be on the defending champions Portugal who won their first European championship in 2016. Can the champions lead by one of the greatest footballers of this generation, Cristiano Ronaldo, hold on to their title or the young teams like Belgium, England or France replace them as champions?
The competition was established in 1958 and Soviet Union (now separated to many countries like Russia, Ukraine, etc.) was the first country to win the competition by defeating Yugoslavia by the score of 2-1.
Spain and Germany are the most successful countries to have won the competition for a record 3 times.
The infamous and highly controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will finally make its debut at the European cup in this competition. The inclusion of VAR means there will be a lot of disappointment, anger, and a lot of ‘Thank God for VAR’ during this tournament.
